Regal Funds Management: Can hedge funds crack A$1.3 trillion held in Aussie Superannuation Funds?Apr 14 2011 1 Comment
Regal Funds Management: A high calibre Australian hedge fund manager
Regal was founded in early 2004 and is a Sydney based long/short equity manager. The firm runs fundamental strategies utilizing research driven, bottom up stock selection and quantitative strategies based on unique combinations of long term and intraday factors across the Asian region. In July 2010, Regal announced that it had sold 30% of its equity to Ascalon Capital Managers Ltd. Ascalon is 100% owned by Westpac Bank Corporation and invests in boutique funds management firms. Regal's funds are strong performers (the flagship fund returned over 20% annualized net) and have won several awards. Melbourne based Zenith Partners rates the Regal Long Short Australian Equity Fund as "highly recommended". CIO Philip King speaks about the misconceptions around market neutral, as the strategy does not mean "low volatility, low risk or low returns". However, market neutral funds only work with the appropriate risk management. King explains how he and his team manage to be "right and early when others aren't", and how he believes that outstanding opportunities will continue. He also talks about how Australia is different from other hedge fund centers, the role hedge funds should play in portfolios and if they have a chance to crack the A$1.3 trillion held in Aussie Superannuation Funds? Philip King joined Regal in 2006 and has a solid track record in fundamental long short investing. He was previously a Hedge Fund Manager at De Putron Funds Management (DPFM) in London for six years and before that a sell side analyst with Macquarie Bank for five years. Prior to working at Macquarie Bank, Philip worked at KPMG for eight years. Philip holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of New South Wales, is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, a member of the UK Society of Investment Professionals, a Chartered Accountant and is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.
