Mauro Cunha is Partner and Head of Equities of Sao Paulo based Mauá-Sekular Investimentos. Mauá was founded by Luiz Fernando Figueiredo, who served as Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Brazil before setting up the Gavea hedge fund with former Central Bank Governor Arminio Fraga 2001 in Rio de Janeiro. In 2005, Mauá was formed in Sao Paulo as a spin-off from Gavea.
In October 2009, Mauá merged with Sekular Investimentos to form Mauá-Sekular. Sekular has a strong expertise in credit and was founded by senior executives of Banco Safra. In this Opalesque BACKSTAGE video, Cunha talks about his approach to invest in Brazil, how to manage risk in higher than average volatile markets, the development and maturation of the Brazilian financial markets, which after the reforms of the 90s has become exceptionally strong and resilient. Brazil was one of the first G20 economies to emerge from the global financial recession (already in Q2 of 2009). Cunha also discusses if from an investor's perspective local Brazilian hedge funds (multi mercado funds, regulated as mutual funds) are superior to the usual Cayman funds, and highlights some of the opportunities ahead for the country.
