Justin Kendrick: Growth, performance, diversification: The greater opportunity in Asian small/mid capsAug 27 2014 1 Comment
Justin Kendrick has 26 year of experience in Asian markets, initially broking Asia out of London, before moving to Hong Kong and Singapore. He founded Binjai Hill in 2004 as a specialist fund manager for Asian small and mid caps, aiming to produce a low volatility stream of positive risk adjusted returns (annualized performance is 13.3% since inception). The UCITS version of his fund has been seeded by Austria’s Erste Bank.
Kendrick and his team have had 3000 company meetings since inception focusing on long term corporate and professional relationships in Asia and a research driven, disciplined risk management and portfolio construction. Binjai Hill Funds merged with Javelin Wealth Management Group in 2014, which is a Capital Markets Services (CMS-AI) licensed entity, regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Since 2001 small-mid caps have mostly out-performed MSCI AxJ except in 2008 during the Global Crisis and in 2011. With 15,000 stocks, this universe offers a wide opportunity set where active managers are able to provide alpha through stock selection. Kendrick particularly concentrates on domestic demand that is driven by structural factors. Hear Kendrick explain: - Why the top-down perspective is important - Asian investors should focus on risk-adjusted returns, not having “a spectacular year and lose it all in the next..” - Why investors are interested in Kendrick’s fund - How to compound better returns - Courage and timing: knowing when to be 100% cash Prior to establishing Binjai Hill Asset Management, Justin Kendrick was the Head of Regional Sales at ABN-AMRO Asia securities where he was responsible for the team selling Asian and Global equities to global and regional CIOs and senior fund managers. Before ABN-AMRO, Justin was the Head of Singapore Equity Sales at HSBC Securities Asia. Previously, he was a Managing Director at Crosby Securities' Asian Corporate Finance business while concurrently the Global Head of Equity Sales. As the Head of Asian Corporate Finance, Justin was responsible for raising over $3bn, primarily for smaller companies. As Global and Asian Head of Equity Sales at Crosby, Justin coordinated five principal offices of London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong & Singapore. He was one of the four Managing Directors on the Main Board. During 1991-93, he moved to Crosby’s North Asian operations and assumed responsibility for rebuilding Crosby’s Asian sales team resulting in 60% of group revenues by 1993 up from 10%. He was Crosby’s No.1 salesman by revenue in 1988-91. Justin is a Fellow, Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, UK. He holds a B. Sc., Economics and Economic History from Bristol University, UK. He was also a 2nd Lieutenant, Gurkas, H.M. Forces (Army). [less]
