Jerry Swank founded Swank Capital with just $1 million in 2003, focusing on investing in energy infrastructure Master Limited Partnerships. MLPs are limited partnerships that are publicly traded on securities exchanges, but technically are partnerships in the U.S. and so do not pay taxes.
Since 2003, MLPs as an asset class have grown from $30bn in investment to $300bn today, and have also been the best performing asset class in the world over the last 10, 5, and 3 year periods. Swank Capital with its focus on energy MLP's has grown to $1.5bln in assets under management during that same period.
In this Opalesque.TV interview, Jerry describes the advantages of investing in energy infrastructure MLPs, which not only provide tax benefits flowing to investors but also low commodity exposure.
Energy MLPs own energy infrastructure in the U.S., including most of the pipelines, natural gas, gasoline, oil, storage, terminals, and processing plants, and so are integral to run the energy infrastructure to the U.S. They therefore provide a very basic, stable business, and have consistently delivered for investors.
According to Jerry, the recent finding of gas and oil in the United States will lead to the continued success in energy MLPs. In addition, learn about the following:
- Institutional investor movement into MLPs
- How shale drilling is changing the energy world
- How increased domestic energy production fits into the future
- Building a high caliber research team from buy-side experience and integrating sophisticated risk management tools
- Utilizing intellectual property to build long-only multi-class products
- Challenges of launching a retail closed-end fund
- Building MLP indexes to more accurately weight all MLPs
