Barney Schauble, Nephila Capital: Investing in reinsurance and weather risk

Barney Schauble is a managing director of Bermuda based Nephila Capital, a leading investment manager specializing in the reinsurance industry investing in insurance-linked securities, catastrophe bonds, insurance swaps, and weather derivatives.

In this Opalesque TV BACKSTAGE video, you will learn:
* Who invests in catastrophe and weather risk - why and how?
* How to set up positions in catastrophe and weather risk
* Capacity, growth and outlook of these uncorrelated investment strategies
* Barriers to entry and evolution of the asset class

Nephila Capital has been managing institutional assets in this space since it was founded in 1998. In June 2008, Man Group acquired a 25 percent interest in Nephila Capital.

Bermuda, for the time being, remains the leading single top offshore risk financing center. Many Lloyds of London insurers and reinsurers have re-domiciled from London to Bermuda. More than 13 of the world’s top 40 reinsurers are based in Bermuda, and Bermuda is the fourth largest reinsurance market in the world after Germany, the US and Switzerland. Bermuda-based reinsurers’ total net written reinsurance premiums exceeds those of London-based reinsurers.

About the firm name: According to Bermuda folklore, the silk spider Nephila clavipes is known for its ability to predict bad weather. It is called the “hurricane spider” since it spins its strong, golden web close to the ground when a hurricane is approaching and high up in the shrubs and trees when the weather is nice.
